CRAZY, ABNORMAL & NORMAL
tlhIHvaD tlhej'a' je?
Don't worry it's not a typo. I just asked y'll how are you in Klingon.
WHAT IS CRAZY?
A robot dancing amidst puppet show? A christian bride wearing crimson-red lehanga to her wedding? or a spanish article in english newspaper? (Now I must've sound crazy for opening this article with some video game language)
Some people would find some fashion trends crazy. Like Indian brides wearing sport shoes to their wedding, as if they have to run away from pavilion as soon as they get any chance.
Or some would find Einstein crazy for making two separate holes in his door for his two cats to pass separately uninterrupted by other.
Sounds funny right? But crazy.
So what really is crazy? or perhaps I should say who's crazy? It depends on us right? Who & what we call crazy. There's fair possibility that what we find unusual & crazy could be normal to other person. It's subjective. But a possible way to define crazy would be to define what's normal.
NORMAL & ABNORMAL
Kids playing in garden, people going out for morning and evening walks, professors giving lectures, someone eating jam with noodles or a person having ten lattes a day.
How'd you categorize these activities on the basis of normal & abnormal?
Maybe all five sounds normal to you or maybe not. It's also subjective.
Ofcourse we can't draw strict line between normal or abnormal until we're talking about some specific domain. But these words are used in day to day life conviniently. We can easily categorize a person's activity into crazy, normal & abnormal. But what's the correct criteria for defining these terms?
ABNORMALITY
In psychology, abnormality is defined as a state where the person is not able to continue his/her daily life activity or can't continue the routine, causes harm to oneself as well as others & violate social norms.
To understand these points look upon a person with schizophrenia. In India, it's common scenario in streets where many crazy people wander. Well those people aren't exactly crazy, one way or another there suffering from some kind of abnormality. Most of the time, they're not properly dressed, speak abusive language(violation of social norms), can't take care of themselves or have no awareness of themselves (discontinuous daily life activities) & harm themselves or throw stones at others (harm to oneself & other).
Many times a child with mere learning disabilities like Dyslexia are considered abnormal.
Imagine all the situations in which you've considered someone abnormal.
Did all of the criteria of abnormality mentioned above apply here?
If no, then is it always appropriate to call them abnormal?
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
Think of person with schizophrenia again, do you think his actions are only disturbing to others?
You'd we surprised know that people with such distressing mental disorders are often victim of violence besides the fact that they're considered violent.
And the children with some juvenile learning disorder with conviction of being abnormal might grow upto be inclusive & reserved.
In conclusion, we don't have to strictly categorize normal & abnormal, but when it comes to health-both physical & psychological-we should use these words wisely.
Maybe most of the times, we don't touch people's heart by moving mountains or long speeches, sometimes small gesture & using conviction-free language can make a great difference.
Thankyou for reading till the end guys. Share with me your personal experience with these words in comment section.
